One of the most well known and recognised tors
on the moor. Leather Tor forms one angle of the high triangle formed by
itself, Sharpitor and Peak Hill lying
between the northern side of Burrator
Reservoir and the main Yelverton to Princetown road. It is a impressive
steep sided peak with extensive clitter fields and sheer drops of a 100ft
or more. The views from the top of southern Dartmoor are magnificent and
well worth the climb. One explanation of the origin of the name Leather
Tor is that it comes from the Anglo Saxon word hlead meaning steep or cliff. |
