Cross Gate is situated at the end of a
lane running up from the circular road around Burrator Reservoir just
before Norsworthy Bridge and below Leather Tor. Nearby is Devonport
Leat (in the foreground in the above photograph) and also a ruined cross
which was restored in 1914. It is called Cross Gate Cross, however it
probably originated elsewhere. The parish records of nearby Walkhampton
mention a cross known as Leather Tor cross in 1750. No sign of this
cross exists on Leather Tor so it is possible that this was the cross
now situated at Cross Gate. It stands over 6ft tall but the head is
missing.
