Large Red Damselflies have a red abdomen and dark markings towards the end. Males tend to be more vibrant in colour than the female. Widespread throughout the country it is often the first damselfly to be seen in spring being seen on the wing from April through to September and even later. It can be seen resting on vegetation usually near water and feeds on small insects.
