Latin name - Libellula depressa Flight period: May to July (occasionally also in April and August to September) This dragonfly prefers shallow areas of water and is often the first to colonise new ponds. Both sexes appear "fat" with a broad abdomen, the females have brown abdomens unlike the male's blue but both have yellow spots along the segment sides. In both sexes the wing bases are very dark brown and the eyes are chocolate-brown. |
