Latin name - Pyronia tithonus

Flight period - June to September

Wingspan 3.7 to 4.8 cm, 1.5 to 1.9 inch.

The Gatekeeper is a medium-sized brown butterfly which is on the wing in the summer, found in grassland, hedgerows and woodland edges. It is also known as the Hedge Brown. It is brown above, with large orange patches in the middle of the wings. It has one large eyespot on the forewing, one smaller eyespot on the hindwing and two small white 'pupils' in the eyespots. Favourite nectar sources include Wild Marjoram, Common Fleabane, Ragworts, and Bramble.
