Latin name - Sylvia communis
The Common Whitethroat is another summer visitor and, like the Wheatear,
winters in Africa, south of the Sahara. They arrive in mid-April and can
be seen in open areas where there is scrub, bushes and hedges for cover
and nesting. They have white throats, brown upper-parts, reddish-brown
wings and a pinkish breast. The male has a grey head but the female has
a brown head as do young birds. They feed on insects and berries. They
return to Africa for the winter in early October. |
