Latin name - Calidris alba
This is a winter visitor and passage migrant in spring and autumn to
the United Kingdom. It breeds in the high Arctic and winters in Europe,
south Asia, south Africa, Australia and South America These photographs
were taken in September at Slapton Sands, South Devon. There were behaving
in their typical fashion, feeding busily along the tideline, darting
away from incoming waves. Pale grey upperparts, white underparts, black
legs with a short, straight black bill they are energetic birds and a
delight to watch.They feed on small marine worms, crustaceans and molluscs
and are usually found on long beaches.
