Latin name - Tringa totanus
Redshanks have a medium-length bill with an orange base, brown speckled
back and wings, a pale belly and distinctive, bright orange-red legs.
They can be seen all the year round feeding on insects, earthworms, molluscs
and crustaceans along rocky, muddy or sandy shores. However during winter
their numbers are swelled by overwintering migrants from Iceland. They
breed in inland and coastal wetland habitats. The nest is just a shallow
depression on the ground, concealed near or under vegetation. |
