Latin name - Aegithalos caudatus
The reason for its common name is immediately obvious, its black and
white tail is very long being bigger than its body. In fact it has the
longest tail of any British bird in proportion to its body. The body is
fluffy and pinkish, the head has a white crown, black marks above the
eyes running into the nape. The eyes have red rings and the bill is small
and black. Young birds lack the pink colouration and have greyish-black
cheeks. Long-tailed Tits are usually seen in small flocks of 20 or so
individuals. They can be seen hunting for their diet of insects through
woods and hedgerows. Increasing they can be found feeding in gardens making
use of peanut and suet feeders.
