Latin name - Larus argentatus

The Herring Gull is most people's idea of a seagull, an extremely common gull all around our coasts it is also found far inland especially in winter. A large gull up to 60cm long with a wingspan of up to 96cm, it can live for over 30 years. Both sexes are similar in appearance with light grey upper-parts, white under-parts, a white head and neck, pink legs with webbed feet, yellow bill with a red spot by the tip and yellow eyes with an orange orbital ring. The young are mottled brown and do not look fully adult until their fourth year.
