Latin name - Carduelis chloris

Similar in size to a House Sparrow, the Greenfinch is a large finch with a forked tail. The male is more highly coloured in the summer than in the winter. It is mostly green in colour with yellow flashes in its wings and tail, the under-parts being brighter green than the back. The female is duller with similar wing markings but with a streaked, more brownish back. The young are similar to the females but with more streaks and can be confused with House Sparrows. The Greenfinch can be seen in woods, hedges and have adapted easily to man inhabiting any areas with a fairly dense cover of trees or shrubs such as parks and gardens. They eat seeds and insects often visiting bird tables especially as weed seeds decline due to intensive agriculture.
