Latin name - Parus major The largest member of the tit family found in the United Kingdom, the Great Tit is slightly smaller than a House Sparrow. It has a green back, yellow under-parts, glossy black head and throat with white cheeks. The wings are blue-grey with a white wing bar. There is a black stripe down its breast and under-parts which is broader in the male bird than in the female. Young birds are similar to the adults except they are duller and paler. Originally a woodland bird it has adapted well to man becoming a frequent visitor to parks and gardens. It east insects, seeds and nuts and has a powerful bill. |
