Home PageBirds of Devon and Cornwall Coal Tits

Latin name - Periparus ater

The Coal Tit is the smallest tit in the United Kingdom. Both male and females have a black cap on their heads with a white patch on the back of their necks, a black 'bib', a grey back and two white wing bars on each wing. The young are browner with the under-parts, cheeks, nape, and wing bars more a yellow colour. Can be seen in most woodland where its small, slender bill allows it to feed on conifer seeds. It is also a regular visitor to gardens where it will visit seed and peanut feeders behaving very much like a Blue Tit.
